Itinerary

Day 1

Bangkok – Uthai Thani (L)

Depart early in the morning for Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya grew into one of Asia’s most important trading centers, welcoming merchants from across Europe, Persia, China, and Japan before the city was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. Explore the atmospheric ruins of temples, monasteries, and royal palaces that reflect the wealth and cultural influence of this once-prosperous kingdom.

Continue north through the fertile Central Plains countryside to a traditional drum-making village, where local artisans continue techniques passed down through generations. Observe the craftsmanship involved in shaping and assembling the drums, an important part of Thai ceremonial and cultural traditions. Later, discover another aspect of local wisdom with an introduction to traditional Thai herbal products and natural aromatherapy, where locally sourced plants and herbs are transformed into oils, balms, and fragrances using time-honoured extraction methods.

Lunch is served in a charming riverside community renowned for its beautifully preserved wooden shop houses decorated with intricate gingerbread-style carvings. The town has received UNESCO recognition for its heritage conservation efforts and retains much of its historic character.

In the afternoon, visit Uthai Thani’s remarkable Wat Tha Sung, one of Thailand’s most distinctive contemporary temples. The monastery is especially known for its spectacular Crystal Hall, where countless mirrored glass mosaics create a shimmering interior effect inspired by celestial imagery in Buddhist cosmology. Nearby, the impressive Golden Hall showcases elaborate Thai craftsmanship and architecture influenced by royal ceremonial design. Beyond its visual splendour, the temple remains an active spiritual center for local worshippers and pilgrims from across the country.

Day 2

Uthai Thani – Sukhothai (B, L, D)

Begin the day with a glimpse into one of Thailand’s enduring spiritual traditions as local residents offer food and alms to monks during the early morning merit-making ritual. This daily practice reflects the close connection between Thai communities and Buddhist monastic life. During breakfast at the hotel, observe the traditional flag-raising ceremony, a long-standing custom that continues to mark the start of the day in many parts of the country.

Thailand’s rich history provides a fascinating backdrop to everyday life, expressed through its architecture, religious monuments, and cultural traditions preserved over centuries. Travel north to Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former frontier town of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The peaceful ruins, ancient laterite temples, and defensive walls offer insight into the strategic importance of this once-thriving settlement. En route, sample the province’s well-known “egg bananas” a small and fragrant local variety considered a regional specialty.
Continue to Sukhothai, regarded as the birthplace of the first Thai kingdom and often translated as the “Dawn of Happiness.” The city played a defining role in the development of Thai art, language, and Buddhism during the 13th and 14th centuries. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant before continuing towards the Sukhothai / Si Satchanalai district.

Towards sunset, visit Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, one of the region’s most historically significant temples. Its elegant Khmer-style prang is particularly beautiful in the warm light of late afternoon, highlighting the refined architectural details of the sanctuary. The temple is also home to a revered Walking Buddha image, celebrated for its graceful proportions and gentle expression, and considered among the finest examples of Sukhothai-period artistry. As evening approaches, the peaceful surroundings create a memorable setting to appreciate the spiritual and artistic heritage of northern Thailand.

From here, a short walk takes you to your retreat for the night. Baan Chomprang, a duo of traditional wooden houses, decorated with taste, nestled on the side of the river with a lush garden, offers an unmatched tranquility. A traditional dinner is served at your hotel.

Day 3

Sukhothai (B, L, D)

After breakfast, spend a leisurely day discovering the peaceful landscapes and cultural heritage of Si Satchanalai, an area known for its slower pace of life, traditional communities, and important historical legacy.

Begin with a visit to Si Satchanalai Historical Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing shared with Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet. Once a key satellite town of the Sukhothai Kingdom, Si Satchanalai played an important role as a religious and trading centre during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Park is renowned for its remarkably preserved temple ruins set amongst shaded forests and quiet ponds, creating a particularly serene atmosphere. Architectural styles found throughout the site reflect both Sukhothai elegance and earlier Khmer influences. Explore the historical park either by bicycle for a more immersive experience or by tram for a relaxed guided visit.

Continue to Suntree Weaving House, a small local weaving community committed to preserving traditional textile techniques that have been passed down through generations. Learn about the natural materials, patterns, and craftsmanship used in regional weaving traditions before taking part in a simple hands-on workshop to create a small handmade souvenir inspired by local textile motifs.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant celebrated for its traditional wooden architecture and authentic regional cuisine, offering an opportunity to experience the distinctive flavours of northern Thailand in a charming setting.

In the afternoon, return to the hotel and enjoy time at leisure. You may wish to explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle or simply relax within the resort’s peaceful gardens surrounded by tropical plants and seasonal flowers. Dinner will be served at the hotel.

Day 4

Sukhothai – Chiang Mai (B, L)

Depart in the morning for a scenic journey through northern Thailand, passing rice fields, forested hills, and rural communities where traditional ways of life remain closely tied to the land. Along the way, learn about the importance of handwoven textiles in Thai culture. In many northern villages, cotton and silk weaving is still part of daily life and ceremonial dress, with artisans preserving techniques passed down through generations.

Travel through mountainous areas inhabited by Karen and other hill tribe communities, known for their distinctive cultural traditions, handicrafts, and close relationship with nature. Various Royal Development Projects in these regions focus on sustainable agriculture, education, and livelihood support, helping local communities improve living conditions while preserving cultural identity and protecting natural resources.

Continue to Lamphun, one of northern Thailand’s oldest cities and an important centre of the former Hariphunchai Kingdom. Visit one of its most revered temples, admired for its elegant blend of Lanna and earlier Hariphunchai architectural styles. The temple features a striking golden chedi and houses a remarkably large bronze gong, considered among the biggest in the world, along with finely crafted woodwork and historic Buddhist art that reflect the region’s deep spiritual heritage.

Continue to Chiang Mai, the cultural heart of northern Thailand and former capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, known today for its temples, creative atmosphere, and surrounding mountain landscapes.

Day 5

Chiang Mai (B, L)

Begin the day with a visit to Warorot Market, one of Chiang Mai’s most vibrant and longstanding local markets, located near the Ping River in the heart of the city. Accompanied by your guide, explore the lively alleys filled with fresh produce, local delicacies, flowers, spices, and everyday goods that reflect the daily life and traditions of northern Thailand. Depending on the season, guests will have the opportunity to sample local fruits or regional street food specialties while discovering the atmosphere of this authentic market frequented by local residents.

Visit Wat Sri Suphan, located in Chiang Mai’s traditional silver-making district. The temple is renowned for its remarkable silver ordination hall, a unique example of contemporary craftsmanship that continues the city’s long association with metalwork. In the surrounding lanes, artisans still preserve silversmithing techniques. Continue to the Ancient Lanna Arts Study Centre, where visitors can observe traditional methods and learn how these skills are being maintained and adapted by younger artisans.

Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant before returning to the hotel for some leisure time.

In the late afternoon, visit Wat Umong Suan Putthatham, a forest temple dating back to the late 13th century, built during the reign of King Mangrai. Unlike the ornate city temples, Wat Umong is known for its tranquil woodland setting and its network of ancient meditation tunnels, originally designed to support monastic retreat practice.

The journey continues towards the slopes of Doi Suthep Mountain, where the soft evening light creates ideal conditions for photography. From the viewpoint near the summit, take in sweeping views over Chiang Mai as the city begins to glow at sunset and gradually lights up after dusk.
